ChemPubSoc Europe is an organization of 16 continental European chemical societies. It was founded in the late 1990s. The amalgamation of 15 chemical journals owned by national chemical societies resulted in the formation of 13 high-quality European journals. ChemPubSoc Europe also owns the ChemViews Magazine.

De Cola is Professor Exceptionnelle at the University of Strasbourg (ISIS) as chair of Supramolecular and Bio-Material Chemistry, and part time scientist at the INT-KIT, Karlsruhe, Germany.

Her group, the lab for chemistry and supramolecular biomaterials  actively researches a wide variety of topics such as:

Fluorescence microscopy has become an indispensable tool to interrogate biological systems at the cellular and molecular level. While historically mostly used in a qualitative manner, rapid advances in labelling methods, microscope automation and camera and computer technology have made it easier to extract meaningful quantitative data from microscopy images. This transition of microscopy into a more quantitative technique brings significant scientific benefits in the form of new applications and improved performance and reproducibility. However, the multidisciplinary character also steepens the learning curve for the non-expert. The aim of this course is to lower the threshold for young and experienced researchers by providing an overview of different flavours of quantitative fluorescence microscopy techniques including live cell imaging, imaging of molecular dynamics and high-content microscopy. To this end, theoretical lectures will be complemented by hands-on sessions so as to provide in-depth practical knowledge.


Key Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the basics of current light microscopy techniques
  • Know to select the appropriate microscopy tool for a given biological question
  • Know how to acquire images in a quantitative manner
  • Be able to perform basic image processing and annotation operations

Decisions in economic or social domains can then also be influenced by the work of excellent research groups. This is not surprising, as ground-breaking research may lie at the heart of solutions to the key challenges facing our society today (environment, mobility, health, etc.). Science is the driver of innovation.

Fundamental research seldom leads to short-term economic or social valorisation. It is, however, essential for ensuring our welfare and well-being in the long term. That is why the FWO is dependent on government funding. A balanced distribution of resources between targeted and non-targeted research is required.

With the financing of strategic research in the broadest sense, the FWO takes an important step to valorisation.

Non-governmental 'research councils' are a tradition in Europe. The FWO, too, is a member of the European Research Council (ERC) and involved in various European research initiatives.
